Sustainability Policy

Sustainability Statement

Date: July 2026

At Contour Lines, we believe that understanding the past should not come at the expense of the future.

Wherever possible, we aim to operate in a way that reduces waste and minimises environmental impact.

Our Approach

Print to Order

Printed products are produced only when ordered.

This reduces waste associated with unsold stock, storage and unnecessary production.

Recyclable Packaging

Where possible, packaging materials are selected for their recyclability and environmental performance.

Customers are encouraged to reuse or recycle packaging materials after delivery.

Local Production

Contour Lines aims to work with United Kingdom printing providers, reducing transportation requirements and supporting local businesses.

Long-Life Products

Historic maps are designed to be collected, displayed and enjoyed for many years.

By creating products with lasting value, we aim to encourage thoughtful purchasing and reduce unnecessary waste.

Looking Forward

Contour Lines will continue to review materials, suppliers and business practices in order to improve sustainability wherever practical and financially viable.

Terms and Conditions

Terms and Conditions

Last updated: 23 July 2026

1. About Contour Lines

Contour Lines is operated by Suzane Donaldson trading as Contour Lines.

Business address:
39 Bridge Street
Selkirk
TD7 5BS

Email: contourlines.scot@yahoo.com

These Terms and Conditions apply to the use of the Contour Lines website and to orders for products and services supplied by Contour Lines.

Nothing in these Terms and Conditions affects your statutory consumer rights.

2. Products and Services

Contour Lines supplies:

printed historic map art

the Contour Lines Studio Service

personalised and commissioned map products

other products or services described on the website

Printed maps are supplied unframed unless the product description states otherwise.

Historic maps are presented as art and heritage products. They must not be relied upon for modern navigation, legal boundaries, property transactions, engineering, surveying or other safety-critical purposes.

3. Product Descriptions

We take reasonable care to ensure that descriptions, prices, sizes and images are accurate.

Colours and tones may vary slightly between the image displayed on a screen and the finished printed product because of differences in screens, paper and printing processes.

Historic maps may contain outdated place names, boundaries, routes or geographical information reflecting the period in which the original map was produced.

4. Placing an Order

Submitting an order form or sending an email is an order request and does not create a binding contract.

After receiving your request, we will confirm:

the product or service requested

the product code, format, size and quantity

availability

the total price

delivery arrangements

any information needed for a personalised order

We will then issue an invoice.

A binding contract is formed when payment has been received and we confirm in writing that the order has been accepted.

If we cannot accept an order after payment has been received, we will notify you and refund the payment in full.

You are responsible for checking the order details before making payment.

5. Prices and Payment

All prices are shown in Pounds Sterling.

The price payable is the price confirmed in the invoice.

UK postage and packaging are included where stated on the website. Any additional delivery costs will be explained before the contract is formed.

Payment must be received before printing or Studio Service work begins, unless otherwise agreed in writing.

6. Standard Printed Products

Standard printed products are produced to order.

Production and dispatch normally take 5–7 working days from receipt of payment. Delivery time is additional.

Being printed to order does not, by itself, make a standard catalogue product personalised.

We will deliver printed goods without undue delay and normally within 30 days of the contract being formed unless a different period has been agreed with you.

We remain responsible for the goods until they are delivered to you or to a person nominated by you.

You must provide an accurate and complete delivery address. Where an order is returned because incorrect information was supplied, we may charge a reasonable additional delivery cost before resending it.

7. Contour Lines Studio Service

The Studio Service is a research and curation service costing £20.

Based on the information you provide, Contour Lines will search historic map collections and curate up to 10 potentially relevant maps.

The Studio Service includes one finished image at no additional charge, supplied as

one A4 printed map.

The £20 fee pays for the research and curation work. It does not purchase ownership of the complete collection of source maps or every image reviewed during the research.

Although reasonable care will be taken, we cannot guarantee that a map exists for every requested place, date, building or feature, or that every surviving map will be suitable for producing a finished image.

You are responsible for supplying accurate locations, dates, addresses, landmarks and other relevant details.

8. Starting the Studio Service Early

You normally have 14 days from the day after the Studio Service contract is formed to cancel the service.

We will not begin research during that period unless you expressly request that the work starts early.

Where you request an early start and later cancel before the research is complete, you may be charged a reasonable proportion of the £20 fee based on the work completed before cancellation.

Your right to cancel the service ends once the Studio Service has been fully completed, provided you expressly requested early performance and acknowledged that your cancellation right would end upon full completion.

If you do not request an early start, research will begin after the 14-day cancellation period has ended.

9. Personalised Products

Products created specifically from a customer’s instructions, location, wording, dates, photographs or other individual requirements may be classed as personalised or made to the customer’s specifications.

The ordinary change-of-mind cancellation right does not normally apply to clearly personalised or custom-made goods.

We will make it clear before payment where an order is being treated as personalised.

This does not affect your rights where a personalised product is faulty, damaged, not as described or does not match the agreed specification.

10. Cancelling a Standard Printed Order

For standard, non-personalised printed products ordered online or by email, you may cancel without giving a reason.

You must tell us that you wish to cancel within 14 days beginning the day after you, or a person nominated by you, receives the product.

You must return the product within 14 days after telling us that you wish to cancel.

You are responsible for the cost of returning an unwanted standard product unless it is damaged, faulty or incorrect.

Returned products must be securely packaged. You may inspect the product as you would reasonably be permitted to inspect it in a shop.

We may make a reasonable deduction from the refund if handling beyond what is necessary to inspect the product has reduced its value.

11. Cancellation Refunds

Where a standard printed order is validly cancelled, we will refund:

the price paid for the returned product; and

the cost of standard delivery, where this was charged separately.

Where you chose a more expensive delivery method, we are only required to refund the equivalent standard delivery cost.

We may withhold the refund until we receive the returned product or evidence that it has been sent back, whichever occurs first.

Refunds will be made without undue delay and no later than 14 days after receiving the returned product or evidence of return.

Refunds will normally be made using the original payment method unless otherwise agreed.

12. Faulty, Damaged or Incorrect Products

We are responsible for supplying products that are of satisfactory quality, fit for their stated purpose and as described.

Please contact us as soon as reasonably possible if a product:

arrives damaged

is faulty

is incorrect

does not match its description or the agreed specification

We may ask for photographs or other reasonable information to help us assess the problem.

Depending on the circumstances and your statutory rights, we may offer a repair, replacement, repeat performance, price reduction or refund.

Contour Lines will bear reasonable return costs where a product is faulty, damaged or incorrect.

12. Delayed or Missing Deliveries

Please contact us if an order has not arrived within the expected delivery period.

We will take reasonable steps to trace delayed items and arrange an appropriate solution.

We are not responsible for delays caused by events genuinely outside our reasonable control. However, this does not remove your legal rights relating to delivery. If a substantial delay occurs and the order cannot reasonably be completed, you may be entitled to cancel and receive a refund.

13. Copyright and Permitted Use

Contour Lines owns its original written material, website design and original creative elements to the extent that they are protected by law.

Historical mapping used in Contour Lines artwork is accessed through the National Library of Scotland’s map collections. Copyright status, reuse conditions and third-party rights vary between maps. Source and rights information applicable to an individual artwork is provided with that artwork and on its Certificate of Provenance.

Where an artwork contains present-day Ordnance Survey OpenData, the following acknowledgement applies:

Contains OS data © Crown data © Crown copyright and database right (2026)

Some artworks may also incorporate third-party mapping or imagery. Any required acknowledgements will be provided with the relevant artwork.

Purchasing a Contour Lines product does not transfer copyright or intellectual-property ownership.

Products are supplied for personal, non-commercial use and display. They may not be copied, reproduced, resold, distributed or used commercially without prior written permission from Contour Lines.

Nothing in these Terms prevents a person from obtaining or using underlying public-domain material independently from its original source.

14. Website Use

You must not use the website:

unlawfully

to interfere with its operation or security

to copy or exploit protected content without permission

to submit false, abusive or fraudulent enquiries

We may update, suspend or remove website content where reasonably necessary.

15. Liability

We do not exclude or restrict liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability for fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or breach of statutory consumer rights.

We are not responsible for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable when the contract was formed.

Products supplied to consumers are intended for personal use. We are not responsible for business losses arising from their use.

16. Privacy

Personal information is handled in accordance with the Contour Lines Privacy Policy.

Information supplied in connection with an order will be used for order processing, delivery, customer service, record keeping and compliance with legal obligations.

18. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time.

The version applying to an order is the version provided or available when the contract is formed. Later changes will not retrospectively alter an existing order unless agreed with you or required by law.

19. Governing Law

These Terms and Conditions are governed by Scots law.

Consumers living elsewhere in the United Kingdom retain any mandatory consumer protections available under the law of the country in which they live.
