Inspiration
The image of St Mary’s Loch was made as a birthday gift for my friend Robyn McCollam, a human ray of sunshine who, with Erin Caldwell, runs the fabulous Glen Cafe at St Mary’s Loch.
It became the catalyst for starting Contour Lines in June 2026 and now sits proudly on the café wall. Beyond it lies the ghost of Megget Reservoir, following the course of Megget Water.
The source is a map from Bartholomew’s Survey Atlas of Scotland (1912), georeferenced at 77% opacity and edited to evoke the coming of autumn.

Bringing History to Life with Maps
Every map in this collection has been chosen for a reason. Some are beautiful, some are fascinating, and some preserve places and stories that have long since disappeared from the landscape. Together they form a collection that celebrates both the history and artistry of cartography.
Future Planning
The website will develop to include literary projects and collaborations with artists. It also hopes to grow a community where work can be shown and shared. We hope at Contour Lines to join the rich and exciting creative and literary culture within the Scottish Borders and the legacy of Scott and Hogg before us.
